It
is only in Delhi where an issue like admission in nursery can lead to
intervention not only by the executive but also by the judiciary. Even the news
related to Parliamentary Elections has taken a backseat compared to the daily
updates on nursery admission. I will not indulge in tagline of “hamare
jamane mein” since jamana (times) have changed since our childhood,
but based on my personal experience I feel the situation here in Delhi is quite
different. I have been witness to the concern of parents for admission of their
child during my stint at various destinations’ viz Shillong, Guwahati, Kolkata,
Ranchi, Port Blair and Ahmedabad (Gandhinagar included), but nowhere admission
to nursery class becomes such central feature of society’s concern as it is in
New Delhi, prompting intervention of not only Lieutenant Governor but of High
Court and Supreme Court as well. Such maara-maari for a seat in nursery
makes admission to IIT JEE a shade better considering that some seats in IIT
went vacant last year. Such maara-maari to admission in nursery signals
that everything is not correct with the society in Delhi where money power can
help one fetch a seat even in the Economically Weaker Section Category leading
to intervention from Judiciary. We need to make introspection to stop such
frenzy.
